What is Nickel Chromium Iron Alloy ?

Nickel-chromium-iron alloys, abbreviated as NiCrFe alloys. It is famous for its high strength, corrosion and oxidation resistance. The composition is predominantly nickel or iron, which determines its specific application. The common ones are Inconel 600, which is nickel-based, and Incoloy 800, which is iron-based.

    Nickel Chromium Iron Alloys Applications

These alloys work extensively in environments where high temperature or corrosion resistance is required. Examples include chemical processing, power generation and the food industry. Not only that, but they can also be used for heating elements and resistance wires, such as certain iron-containing nickel-chromium alloys.

Nickel-based alloys (e.g. Inconel 600) are commonly used in aerospace and gas turbines.
Iron-based alloys such as Incoloy 800, on the other hand, are mostly for use in the chemical and construction industries.

Controversy And Complexity Of Nickel Chromium Iron Alloys

Categorisation of NiCrFe alloys can be controversial due to differences in compositional ratios. The industry sometimes classifies them as nickel-based or iron-based alloys, which can lead to confusion in naming and use.

Definition And Composition Of Nickel Chromium Iron Alloys

The definition is broader and studies have shown that it is a mixture of metals containing nickel, chromium and iron. Based on the proportion of components, we divide it into two categories:

Nickel-based Alloys: Nickel is the main component, with chromium and iron as alloying elements.
Iron-based Alloys: Iron as the main component, with nickel and chromium as alloying elements.

    Nickel (%)Chromium (%)Iron (%)

    7215.58
    7715.57.5
Nickel is usually the main component, but iron-based alloys also exist. Such as Incoloy 800, which can lead to naming confusion.

    Properties And Characteristics

It is valued for its high strength, corrosion and oxidation resistance.  Chromium enhances corrosion and oxidation resistance through the formation of a Cr2O3 surface film, which is particularly suitable for high temperature environments. Nickel-based alloys can withstand temperatures up to 1200°C. In contrast, iron-based alloys exhibit excellent creep and stress-fracture properties in the 600-800°C range.

In addition, some have high resistivity and are commonly used in heating elements and resistance wires. For example, Nichrome A is iron free, but certain formulations such as Nichrome V contain iron.

NiCrFe alloys are high-performance alloys whose definition covers a wide range of formulations based on nickel or iron. These alloys are used not only in industrial equipment, but also in everyday items, which is an unexpected detail.
